96 Daughters in HORTON HEARS A WHO

Apparently not one of the 96 daughters in HORTON HEARS A WHO is fit to be the heroine of the story. Loved this funny rant by an outraged dad who gets it. He really does. Good for you, pops!

  1. i loved it too. amen.

  2. Yeah..and how come there is always at least one dead parent, usually the mother?

  3. Lisa,
    Excellent question!

I’m mom to a son, but obviously I myself am also a daughter.

One reason I can think of is that protagonists are more appealing and instantly get our sympathy if they’re orphaned somehow.

Trying to remember if Simba’s lioness mama was around or if just his dad died in THE LION KING.

  4. Hi,

I read some similar comments on http://www.feministe.us/blog/archives/2008/04/03/horton-hears-a-sexist/.

It’s so heartening to read all these comments, because I could not believe what I was watching. Excited to take a break and watch an animated for a change, I could barely sit through Horton whatever. It was so unabashedly and unapologetically chauvinistic. 96 girls to 1 boy, and its the foolish kid who has mayorhood heaped on his uninterested shoulders; all because he has a penis? Heck, how about giving one of his daughtes a chance? You know the one who gets all straight As?
The theater was packed with little kiddos and their parents, all having a rollicking time with the popcorn and all. But gosh, I am not taking my daughter to another film by these makers. God, a nice Saturday was spoilt watching this tripe. Gripe!
